Speak Up for Science

When drastic cuts to science funding began, UC was directly impacted as one of the nation’s largest public research systems. In response, our group launched the Speak Up for Science advocacy campaign to educate the public on the real-world impact of science funding and mobilize them to contact their lawmakers.

Challenge

We needed to quickly educate a broad public audience on why science funding matters to their everyday lives, and convert that understanding into action by getting people to actually contact their legislators.

Approach

  • Worked with content strategists and copywriters to shape messaging that made the potential impact of science funding cuts understandable, personal, and urgent.

  • Designed the wireframes and visual system for a dedicated landing page and advocacy experience, keeping the content scannable and the call to action prominent.

  • Coordinated content, design, and development on an accelerated timeline, making strategic decisions about scope and prioritization to get the campaign live quickly.

  • Partnered with developers to translate the campaign design into an accessible, responsive digital experience.

  • Advocated for featuring the campaign on UC’s flagship site, leveraging an existing engaged audience rather than relying solely on new campaign traffic.

  • Guided the cross-functional team from initial concept through launch, maintaining alignment across content, design, and development.

Outcome

The campaign landing page was a success, with engagement reaching 98.7% and demonstrating that the experience was both compelling and easy to navigate. This translated directly into action, with users sending more than 15,000 emails to lawmakers, reaching over 72% of the House and Senate.
